Pinocchio : A Metaphoric Archetype The Adventures of Pinocchio , by Italian author Carlo Collodi is one of the more influential pieces of international literature . Arguably translated as much as The Bible , Collodi 's publication established the archetypal format for children 's literature . Dually , reinterpretations of his work have been used more to promote bias ideals than to establish any tribute to his authentic publication . While many of the remakes stay true to the original plot , it is through the divergent use of metaphor that these remakes relay their themes . A prime example of

br this use of ideological persuasion can be seen through contrasting Collodi 's original version completed in 1883 , with the Disney narrative remake in 1940 . Both narratives have had a dramatic influence on popular culture . Many often get the two confused , or even reveal know prior knowledge of Collodi 's version . While virtually identical in plot , it is very apparent that Disney 's version is designed to promote Christian ethics . Collodi originally wrote his novel as a reinterpretation of what he thought were the prevailing sociological concerns of Italy (Perella , 1986 . In an attempt to produce a work that had the weight of social relevance , Collodi 's novel delved into much more controversial and complex themes than can be depicted in a traditional American Christian metaphor . In fact , the complexity of Collodi 's novel can be credited for why the majority of contemporary Pinocchio remakes are actually remakes of the Disney version . Never the less , the contrast between Collodi 's piece and the family of remakes and translations that have stemmed from it can most prevalently be identified in their diverging uses of metaphor

A major contrast between the book and the Disney film narrative can be seen in the film 's handling of the sea creature Monstro . In the animated Disney interpretation of this incident , a dove informs Jiminy Cricket and Pinocchio that Geppetto has been swallowed by a great whale Pinocchio then sets out to the sea with the intention of rescuing Geppetto . He is able to get into Monstro 's belly by fallowing behind a school of fish . Once reunited with Geppetto , Pinocchio starts a fire to incite Monstro to sneeze (Disney , 1940 . This inadvertently results in them being propelled to freedom . Monstro , enraged by the fire in his belly , chases after Pinocchio and Geppetto . Pinocchio manages to swim Geppetto to safety by sacrificing his body as a raft . This sacrifice leads to Pinocchio drowning , but also becoming a real boy . The most blatant metaphor that can be taken from this is the ideal of self sacrifice . This has biblical connotations and could very well be the part of the reason why The Adventures of Pinocchio is almost re-written and translated as much as the bible . The concept that Pinocchio is a wooden boy who aspires for a greater state of being and then he only achieves that state of being through self sacrifice is almost taken directly from Christian ethic .
