Your smoking is injurious to my health do not smoke here

Smoke , and collect your ashes ' - these are some of the appealing slogan-signboards that I have seen in reputed Organizations , to discourage smoking . Of course , this is in addition to the typical standard , age-old instructions against smoking : Smoking is prohibited '- No smoking '- etc

New Jersey State takes the place of pride in its fight against smoking In one of the most important cases in the Superior Court of New Jersey

The State of New Jersey brings this action pursuant to its constitutional , statutory , common law , and /or equitable authority , including without limitations N .J .S .A . 56 :8-9 ,for the purposes , inter alia of obtaining injunctive and equitable relief including restitution as well as for the purposes of obtaining reimbursement for all money paid for the expense and costs that the State has incurred , and continues to incur , in providing health care and other services to the citizens of the State who suffer , or who have suffered , from tobacco-related injuries , diseases and illnesses as a result of the actions of defendants . A number of tobacco products manufacturing companies were charged with participating , conspiring , assisting , encouraging and otherwise aiding and abetting in tobacco-related diseases and damage to public health The Attorney Journal of New Jersey also sought relief pursuant to the Consumer Fraud Act and Civil RICO , N .J-S . 2C-41-1 in to recover monies fraudulently obtained . Various types of relief 's were sought Important among them were

Prohibiting promotion and sale of tobacco products to minors

ii ) Restitution for the expense and costs that the State has incurred and likely to incur in future , to provide relief in to recover monies fraudulently obtained to causing disability

The State of New Jersey spends hundreds of millions of dollars each year to provide

and pay for health care and other necessary facilities and services on behalf of indigents

and other eligible residents whose said health care costs are caused by tobacco-induced

cardiovascular disease , lung cancer , emphysema and other respiratory diseases well as the complications of pregnancy and childbirth including but not limited to low-weight

babies

Some staggering facts as for the damage caused by smoking pertaining to New Jersey State

1 . There are 1 .1 million adult smokers

2 . Highest percentage of them between the 25-44 year old age group

3 . In 1990 , 12 ,605 deaths were related to smoking

The current figures on all the above heads must be much more . In June 1989 , New Jersey banned smoking in buildings owned by boards of education . This was mainly aimed at the teenagers ' students from picking up the smoking habit

But the smokers have not...
