Piaget in 2007 : Implications for the Modern Classroom

Piaget`s studied the behavior of children and their relationships with adults and peers over 70 years ago . His theories have been important and useful foundations for much of educational , social and psychological research , but , as always it is also important to keep up with more recent research . Specifically , teachers need to think about how children have as a result of merging cultures , media influence and the like

However , some of this researcher 's findings are still very applicable today . While Piaget is not

obsolete , his ideas are based on a time when children were very different teachers must constantly be evaluating and reevaluating research as it applies to their students . Simply following older research will surely lead to frustrations in this modern age of education as student dynamics are constantly changing . The following two articles give more insight into Piaget 's early findings and provide some interesting implications for teaching strategies in modern classrooms

Children 's Understanding of Social Rules and Social Status ' by Gavin Nobes and Chris Pawson examines Piaget 's earlier findings of how children react and respond to rules . Piaget asserted that children believed rules to be sacred , universal and unalterable ' especially when directly by adults and that rules were no different in the minds of children from morals . This resulted in a unilateral respect ' for older individuals which means that children accepted the words of adults without hesitation until about the age of 12 years . According to Piaget , they will produce the desired response only because they are being told to do so without any real understanding of its logic . As a result , they are less likely to continue engaging in that behavior when the authority figure is not present . The end result is a child you produces a behavior not out of a sense of understanding , but out of a sense of avoiding punishment . The child never truly believes in the value of the rule and will break it when the fear of punishment abates . The independent study presented in this research article found that children were more likely to view morals as more binding than both adult and child- created rules and cultural conventions to be more binding than child-created rules . They combined stories with rules created by adults and by children with interviews in which the children were to rate the goodness ' or badness ' of an action . The results indicated above tend to conflict with many of Piaget 's tenets

This research study indicates that Piaget 's ideas may be slightly off the mark today and that children are more sophisticatedly able to differentiate between rules and morals and to decipher the credibility of the rule maker . Instead of basing credibility solely on age children are more likely to use their determination of competency Also , authority is more determined by social position , and children seem to understand that authority is bound by certain jurisdictions Finally , children seem to also be willing to acknowledge other children...
