The Physics Involved in Generating Electricity in Austin , Texas

Electricity is everywhere . Everyday objects that are important to us -- from the bulbs that light our houses to the TV we watch our favorite shows with - are useless without electricity . They may not have been invented at all if it weren 't for it . Electricity plays a huge role in our lives by enhancing our health , safety , and comfort . It makes most of our

work a lot easier . We live with its benefits everyday , and it 's one of our more conventional forms of energy . One can list about a hundred different things around him that are powered by electricity

Some may think that electricity is something that was invented years ago when in fact it is a basic part of nature . Electricity is present in the bodies of all mobile animals . For example , our senses translates everything we see , hear , or feel into electric signals , that are then interpreted by our brain which transmits response by electric signals as well . That is why life without electricity is almost life without much complexity

We all know that matter is composed of smaller units called atoms These atoms are composed of much smaller parts - protons , neurons electrons . Gaining an extra electron makes an atom negatively charged and positively charged when it loses one . Application of force makes them flow . This movement of electrons is what we call electricity

Electricity is generated through a transfer of energy : mechanical or chemical , for example , into electrical . Before William Stanley invented the use of alternating current electricity , people were using other sources of energy for their everyday needs . After which , direct current (DC ) electricity - the unidirectional flowing energy such as from batteries and solar cells - was used for outdoor lighting . The use generation and transmission of alternating current (AC ) was established in the late-1800s by Nikola Tesla . With alternating current , electricity flows in one direction then switches to another then back again continously . Because of this , it is much easier to produce and transmit over distances than direct current . The process of generating electricity is based mostly on magnetism . Most objects do not magnet each other because their atoms ' electrons move differently , canceling out each other . Magnets work the other way around . These special characteristics of magnets , attraction and repulsion , are used to conduct electricity . Electrical energy is produced when time or position varies a magnetic field . For example , when a magnet is wrapped with an insulated copper wire coil and is moved quickly near the coil , one can generate voltage

Since electricity is important to people , its demand has a direct relationship with population increase . This increasing demand is supplied by the limited methods of generating electricity . Some of these sources are renewable while some are not . One way of generating electricity is through turbines ( to generators ) that are driven by water boiled by nuclear fission , or...
