Drug testing programs in the employment and athletics are quite instrumental in promoting ethical values in these sectors . In the employment sector for example drug testing ensures an efficient and reliable workforce in an organization . Such are also crucial in improving safety at the workplace . This can be explained by the fact that drug use compromises the reasoning and judgmental power of the victim . On the other hand , drug use in athletics is found to be

a source of unfair competition . It is worthy noting that drugs like steroids serve the purpose of stretching the performance capability of individual beyond natural limits . This brings into question the ethics of fairness against other participants in the competition . Therefore , engaging in drug testing is vital for safeguarding the greatest good of reliability at workplace and just competition

However , from an ethical point of view , drug testing programs are found to contradict our constitutional right to privacy . This is mainly based on the fact that they serve as an intrusion into an individual 's private affairs . Nevertheless , laws and rules form the basis of defining behavioral conduct and expectations . This has the implication that an informed drug testing exercise is ethically acceptable since it gains its authority from the underlying laws of the organization .
