It will not be a mistake to say that Socrates was the most famous philosopher of Classical Greece . He was an Athenian citizen who revolutionized the way people thought about themselves and the world . He was famous for many things : for his questioning teaching method , dogged search for the truth etc . Socrates eventually provoked the fury of the Athenians and was found guilty of impiety and corrupting the city 's youth . His execution profoundly changed ideas about what it meant

to be heroic since he died only because he refused to abandon his principles

There are so many mysteries about his life , so much is unknown for sure He did not leave any written works himself but anyway the whole world still quotes his famous expressions

It is clear though that Socrates was not just an ordinary man and he was and still is admired for his intellectual genius which unfortunately brought him to death that still was noble

This man was naturally observant , acute , and thoughtful and he developed these qualities by constant and systematic use . As Socrates conceived the exercise of the mental powers was not just a mere occupation of leisure hours , but rather a sacred and ever-present duty . He regarded the improvement , not only of himself but also of others . Socrates was a true patriot . Deeply sensible of his debt to the city in which he had been born and bred , he thought that in giving his life to the teaching of sounder views in regard to ethical and political subjects he made no more than an imperfect return . Besides al that Socrates was blest with an all-pervading humor , a subtle but kindly appreciation of the incongruities of human nature and conduct . In a less robust character this quality might have degenerated into sentimentality or cynicism in Socrates , who had not a trace of either , it showed itself principally in what his contemporaries knew as his accustomed irony

There is a story about Socrates which reveals the whole truth about this great man . Once he was told that the Oracle of Delphi had said that Socrates was the wisest man in Athens , he responded not by boasting or celebrating , but by trying to prove the Oracle wrong . And so Socrates decided he would try to find out if anyone knew what was truly worthwhile in life , because anyone who knew that would surely be wiser than him . He questioned everyone he could find , but no one could give him a satisfactory answer . Instead they all pretended to know something they clearly did not . Finally Socrates realized that the Oracle might be right : he (Socrates ) was the wisest man in Athens because he alone was prepared to admit his own ignorance rather than pretend to know something he did not

This was the heart of Socrates ' method : admitting your own ignorance . He never simply said 'yes ' or 'no ' but he questioned . They jokingly say that...
