MEDICAL SCHOOL APPLICATION ESSAY : QUICK MIND AND HEALING HANDS

I remember exactly the moment that I knew for certain that I was meant to be a doctor . I was in the emergency room , watching the doctors take care of my father , who , at that time was suffering from The Widow Maker

It started out innocently : we were expecting my mother to come from India , and to welcome her I was cleaning the house thoroughly . I was just finishing at 2 A .M , when I heard noises from my father 's bedroom I

went up to check on him , and found him at the edge of his bed complaining of a serious acid indigestion . It looked more serious than heartburn though - I noticed he was sweating profusely . I asked him to describe what he was feeling . He told me it feels like a heavy iron plate is on his chest , and his left arm was feeling weird , but assured me he was fine . The doctor said that if it took us a few more minutes to address the situation , I might have lost him . But gratefully , the doctor told me that because of my quick thinking and maintaining a cool , calm and collected attitude , they were able to give my father a 50 /50 chance for survival

My father was unconscious for three days , but has since then made a full recovery and has a long life ahead of him

I shudder to imagine my mother coming home and finding that her husband was claimed by this legendary disease . I shudder to imagine all the other women who have lost their husbands to this disease , of all the sons and daughters who have lost a father . I was lucky , my father was lucky , but we know that it was more than just luck . The whole situation opened my eyes to the importance of life , and how delicate it is . And I felt that I had a gift...
