The Lion , the Witch and the Wardrobe ' is a classic children 's novel by C .S . Lewis that chronicles the pursuits of the four Pevensie children to defeat the white witch and release Narnia from her cold grasp . While the tale is largely based on the adventures of the four children and the creatures that they meet in the world beyond the wardrobe , the four of them also each represent common childhood circumstances that almost all children are most likely to experience .
