Periodic Table of Elements M4 A2

Periodic Table

Introduction

The periodic table of elements is a tabular arrangement of the confirmed elements on earth . As of the present , there are one hundred seventeen confirmed elements . Dmitri Mendeleev , a Russian chemist , is said to be the first person to conceptualize the table of chemical elements . He created the table to show the elements ' recurring trends in their chemical properties . Elements are basically grouped into metals metalloids or non-metals . Over time , other scientists like Antoine Lavosier and Lothar Meyer , made contributions to the table to improve and refine

it

Body

The listing of elements in the periodic table is based on their atomic number in an increasing . The columns are ed as atomic numbers (or Groups ) while rows are the "periods " Groupings are based on the elements ' similarity of properties and trends . One of the most important factors in the classification is the electron present in the elements ' valence shell . Some of the groups ' names are

Group 1 - alkali metals

Group 2 - alkaline earth metals

Group 15 - pnictogens

Group 17 - halogens

Group 18 - noble gases

For example , the element lithium is represented as Li in the periodic table , specifically in the

first column , second row . Looking at the numbers that come with lithium in the table , it will tell

us that the element is classified as an alkali metal and has an atomic number 3

The www .webelements .com provides useful information concerning this metal in relation to its placement in the periodic table . Lithium on its standard state is solid and looks silvery white or gray with silvery tinges . On its solid state , lithium can be cut using a standard knife Moreover , lithium has a single valence electron . It can be mixed with aluminum and magnesium to create alloys . The element can also be used as components of batteries because of its heat capacity . Large amounts of this element are indirectly useful to the synthesis of polymers and fine chemicals

Lithium also has value in medicine . Lithium salts are known to be useful for treating gout as early as the nineteenth century . Recently lithium salts are being used for treating obsessive-compulsive tendencies , migraine , depression and manic diss

The element was discovered in 1817 by Johan August Arfwedson while studying petalite ore . However , he was unsuccessful in his attempts to separate the element from its salt form . The element was finally isolated in 1821 by William Thomas Brande using electrolysis . As a result of having a single valence shell , lithium is highly reactive with low boiling and melting points . Aside from its property to neutralize acid , lithium has the highest specific heat capacity among all solids making the element very useful in heat transfers like in battery operations . Aside from its mechanical uses , lithium can be used for medical purposes (Winter , 1998

Conclusion

The periodic table of elements has become an integral part of chemistry . Other disciplines , like medicine , biology and physics have also found applications of the table

Other than the standard arrangement of elements , there...
