The Passion ' of the Christ As many Bible scholars know , especially with the release of Mel Gibson 's movie in 2004 , the events leading up to the resurrection of Jesus Christ are often referred to as the passion ' of Jesus Christ . The events incorporated in the passion ' include the Last Supper , Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane , the arrest and trial of Jesus , his crucifixion burial , and ultimate resurrection . The last twelve days that Jesus spent on Earth were brutal - filled with betrayal , persecution , intense violence , and an inherent understanding that mankind may just deserve to suffer for their own sins . But Jesus despite everything that was done to him , never gave up on the souls of mankind and chose instead to allow what may be done to him with the knowledge that he was chosen as the King of the Jews for a reason - and that reason was about to come to a terrible fulfillment .
