Parenting style
PARENTING STYLE Parenting styles can likely affect the way children grow up . It is important for parents to be responsive to their children while establishing and maintaining clear rules and limits . Being reared by Asian parents , I grew with basic guidelines . My parents clarify issues in our family and give reasons for my limits . They implemented an assertive-democratic parenting style . I was given many practices in decision-making however , my parents still guided me in seeing the consequences of my choices and decisions . Whenever I misbehave , my parents either solve the problem

with me in to find an acceptable way to meet both our desires or give appropriate consequences for my misbehavior . I was rather given a cool-off ' time when I 'm out of control than being given punishment
On the other hand , other parenting styles have emerged prior and during my childhood , which I was thankful for not being parented that way . For most of Western history , parents were authoritarian as they valued obedience . They commanded their children on what to do and not to do Their rules are precise and cannot be defied . In a sense , children reared with an authoritative style were just an empty vessel as their parents just poured out information , which they think are right . When children misbehave , a corresponding punishment that was strict and stern often results to rebellion
In 1950s and 1960s , permissive parenting was the dominant style used by parents . During these periods , parents had encouraged their children to think for themselves conformity was unvalued and inhibitions were avoided . Parents had implemented a hands-off ' approach . Children were allowed to discover and learn from the consequences of their decisions and actions . Thus , misbehavior was usually ignored
Today , various parenting styles have emerged in most fast-paced societies . Parents are now implementing modern styles that are apt for the thinking and disposition of children today . Included in the modern parenting models are attachment parenting , strict father model , taking children seriously model , and nurturant-parent model . Attachment parenting avoids physical punishment . It accomplishes discipline through recognizing the emotional needs of a child and at the same time , focuses on understanding the child . Strict father model implements a strong value on discipline being a means to survive in a harsh world . Taking child seriously model advocates other methods in reaching agreement with children . It strongly opposes praise and punishment , perceiving it as harmful and manipulative to children . Finally , the nurturant-parent model expects children to explore on their surroundings while parents protect them
There can be many ways in rearing children . In fact , most parents of today adopt the ideas that their parents used on them . Others just get advice from their friends . Personally , an assertive-democratic parenting style suits best for children of today . Being raised in this way , I was able to learn accept responsibility , cope with changes , and make wise decisions . Consequently , whatever parenting practices and styles chosen depend on how parents know their children . Parenting styles should always aim for leading children to positive outcomes in their lives PAGE
