Painted Greek Sculpture
The ancient Greek art and sculptures we knew are very artistic and imaginative , but simple since they are usually white if made from marble . In fact , the Greek sculptures are one of the most influential and significant artistic movement in the art 's history . The foundation or basis of the Roman sculpture and even Western sculpture were provided by ancient Greek statues and sculptures . These Greek sculptures were mainly influenced by stone sculpture of Mesopotamia and Egypt . The sculptures were from carved stones that usually portray or feature the human figure . The

usual Greek figures were either a standing nude male figure (Kouros ) or a draped female figure (Kore . The Peplos Kore (as shown in figure 1 ) is a statue of a young woman covered in a dress called peplos . We can see from the original figure that it looks like it was made to look as simple as it could be , not having too much color But seeing the restored or repainted figure , it seems that it was made to look very colorful and attractive . Some neoclassicists were not accepting this colorful painted sculpture because they believe in the pure beauty and elegance of bare white marble and the plain nobility of the sculpture . Some of them who have seen the actual repainted sculptures in the Greek Museum were stunned and surprised to see a colorful sculpture instead of a simple white figure . But seeing the repainted figure , it didn 't really surprise me at all . Instead , it fascinated me to see an elaborate picture of Greek sculptures and how they looked like when they were created during the ancient times Figure 1 .
