Abstract

Racism is a practice that undermines human rights in all cultures under the globe . It 's a major form of discrimination that is displayed in various forms in the work place , neighborhoods and social arenas . This examines the problems of racism in our society today . The explores methods how to deal with these issues when they occur . The also looks at why and how people discriminate , especially in the context of institutionalized racism

BACKGROUND

Despite the

fact that the town faces minor incidents related to racism there occurrence is increasing rapidly and resentful sentiments are growing deeper . A good example is found in the labor market where certain minority groups complain of being sidelined by the authority 's employment procedures . Ethnocentrism that has permeated our society is cited as the major underlying factor that has contributed to this incident . Indeed Ireland is a country whose society is challenged by similar hurdles . Being a diverse multicultural society with a large proportion of migrant workers , the challenges to promoting equality tackle racism and promote genuine intercultural workplace environments are a major concern for the authorities [justice .ie]

Moreover our legal system has contributed a lot to foster racism . To date our courts of law do not have representation in the board of jurists from minority groups , especially from the colored people . This has fostered insecurities in judicial judgments were minority groups are in court since they feel the lack of a friendly jury in place . Similar cases have been recorded elsewhere , such as the Strauder v . West Virginia of l880 [Flake , 1994] in the USA . Our housing policies are equally questionable . To date , certain groups feel discriminated against in our authority 's housing plan . There grievances have been felt the most by the local resident associations which also represent them . On its part the authorities have defended themselves by stating that they where merely giving preference to families over singles . This response is not unique in the least , if the Plessy v . Ferguson case of 1896 and the Korematsu v . United States case of 1944 in the USA [Flake , 1994] are anything to go by . In these similar cases , minority groups were discriminated upon when it came to housing while the state / authorities cited seemingly noble reasons such as acting in defense of the state of America among other reasons [Korematsu v . United States]

The factors that have influenced racism in our society , workplaces and the legal system are briefly highlighted below

Frequency of Contact or the lack of it

Particular attitudes toward people of color and other ethnic groups have evolved over a period of time in our town due to the proximity of the different ethnic groups to each other that gives opportunity for sentiments and opinions to arise . Hence the amount of contact is a good indicator

Racial thinking has developed in more or less the same proportion to the kind of contact established with...
