Another challenge is to find the motivation to do so since there is little practicality in risking reputation and spending valuable time in this pursuit . The reason why Maslow , Erikson , and Horney 's ideas are still called theories up to this day attests to the fact that there is practically no way of reaching a point when conjectures in the highly abstract world of mental , psychological , and even spiritual development can ever be proven as fact . Therefore they remain theories and would remains so for a very long time . So unless a person is seeking in vain for glory and recognition there is no benefit in formulating a new one

On the other hand a personal theory on personality development will help a person in many ways . It can be used as a tool to understand people better or a way to increase effectiveness in personal communication

It can even be used a tool to increase one 's patience towards an individual exhibiting odd behavior . And rather than lashing at the person for acting like a moron , the personal theory one clings to can give that person a pause to reconsider the situation and at the end offer a more understanding gesture to the person . This world would be a better place - and that one can say , is part of the theory

It may perhaps be more helpful in tackling this complex problem by subdividing the problematic concepts and instead of facing head-on personality development theory , it would be better to examine the two major concepts separately . Thus , it is better to tackle the term personality first and then the term theory second
