Introduction - Since time immemorial , politics has been a part of every human relation , within friends and families . But , it is in the workplace that politics is most prevalent . Everyone in the workplace seeks common goals - success , growth , and financial security . Politics in organizations should be accepted as a fact of life . Personal experiences of workers in organizations all over the world relate that the behavior in and of organizations is political in nature very often . In the recent years , empirical research has supported this belief . Some expressions of political tactics in organizations are : posturing , trying to make a good impression with superiors , networking , public relations , character assassination , sabotage , etc . Research has shown that most managers believe that engaging in politics helps a person in his career advancement . In this essay , we will discuss the realities of politics in an organization

Organizational Politics : Existence , Nature , and Purpose - The existence of politics in organization is a reality that cannot be denied . It can 't be denied that power relationships exist in organizations . Politics exists whenever two or more people work together . Issues of ego self-esteem , and self-interest are present at all times in an organization . All employees of an organization are working for money position , and prestige . All of them want to advance in their career . The fundamental reason behind organizational politics is conflict of interest (Pffefer , 1981 . Only recently have scholars paid attention to finding empirical evidence about the existence of organizational politics in public and private organizations . Miles (1980 ) found that politics in organizations occurs due to ambiguous roles , scarce resources , changes in technology or environment , non-programmed decisions , or organizational change . A study on office politics done by an organization called Political Savvy , revealed that 65 to 80 percent of the people in an office belonged to the group who want to avoid politics ' 15 to 25 percent of the people belonged to the group who indulge in negative politics ' and 5 to 10 percent of the people belonged to the group who indulge in positive politics (Political Savvy
