Thesis Statement

Managing change is necessary for organizations to survive . Individuals react differently to the threat ' of change . Acknowledging the impact of change on the work environment and on individuals is a critical part of moving beyond the change


According to Ichak Adizes (1988 ) in his book `Corporate Lifecycles , the cycles in an organization 's life can be likened to that of human life ranging from birth to aging and to death . The book identifies the following series of 10 lifecycles : Courtship , Infancy , Go-Go Adolescence

, Prime , The Stable Organization , Aristocracy , Early Bureaucracy , Bureaucracy and Death . The Prime stage is optimal

Change produces unavoidable human psychological adjustments and organizational leadership must identify and prepare for this inevitable (Bridges , 1991 . Recognizing the fact that individuals react differently to change and specifically with respect what stage of the organization is in its lifecycle , leaders can guide the corporation effectively by applying the appropriate styles at each stage

For example , at the infant stage , there is strong commitment and purpose , the group morale is high and there is a sense of identity for members of the organization . The organization is relatively fluid with few official titles , minimal and informal organization structure . For this reason changes are easy and quick to make . At this stage leadership must be visionary and nurture commitment

As the Go-Go (or growing ) stage progresses there may be occasions of conflict or inconsistency and change may be more difficult . During this cycle , the leader must be able to share control and delegate responsibility

At the Prime Stage , morale is at its highest and leaders need to strike the fine balance between innovating and managing . The Early Bureaucracy and Bureaucracy stages represent the Aging stage where expectations for growth are lowered . The leader must find ways to give a new lease of life the organization . Organization death comes when the mission is not understood and there is is often required at this stage because (erroneously or not , the current leader is usually seen as the cause of the problem


In conclusion , it is of paramount importance that organizational leadership recognizes what stage in the lifecycle the organization is in understand the impact of change as well as how individuals would react . This will enable the necessary steps to be taken to boost morale and get buy in from employees to ensure that the organization can move towards to Prime stage for survival Bottom of Form
