Jenny and her colleagues had been together in the department for almost twenty years . Mary Ann and Michelle , like Jenny , had acquired professor status and became prominent in the university as faculty members . During these almost twenty years of being in one department , the three women never developed towards a pleasant relationship . Jenny at one time d a civil administrative case against Michelle and the latter d a countercharge . Mary Ann in the midst of this made sure that the two ladies will never see eye to eye . There had

been many exchanges between Mary Ann and Jenny as well as Michelle with Jenny . Though both Mary Ann and Michelle don 't consider themselves as friends , they managed to pool their resources together for their common enemy-Jenny

Scenarios between the three are no longer surprising in their college They have actually become a byword and subject of professional gossip Just recently , Michelle and Mary Ann were together in an adjacent department because of an institute agenda , when Jenny arrived to see one of the other faculty members present . Suddenly a row ensued between Jenny and Michelle . The two actually created a scene with Michelle weeping angrily , hurling insults on Jenny . This did not surprise the chairman of their department and the dean . For years they have dealt with this problem almost on a monthly basis , to say the least

This is not only a relational and personal problem . Scenes like the one described above affect the whole organization in more ways than one . As with any institution or company , those affected in the end are not only these three people . Because they were handling students , time and again the problem permeates the whole system such that students became pawns and objects of manipulations who became both innocent and willing victims in the process

A scene like that is very common in institutions . Organizational problems are people problems which will always be opportunities for leadership challenges . It was a scene where complex emotions are involved and where choices for actions or conduct are crucial but at times taken for granted . This brings us to the subject on emotional labor

Arlie Russell Hochschild , a sociologist , in 1983 defines emotional labor as the management of feeling to create a publicly observable facial and bodily display [which] is sold for a wage and therefore has exchange value ' in his book , The Managed Heart : Commercialization of Human Feeling

Emotional labor is a type of emotional control in which employees endeavor to exhibit the emotions that they are anticipated to demonstrate as they function in their job . Emotional labor is usually done in two principal modes (1 ) entrenched acting in which people attempt to experience the emotions that they necessitate to convey specifically , individuals have to exhaust energy to control emotions .
