The general belief is that the expansive growth of information technology (IT ) and globalization greatly contributed to the change in the American

economy in the 1990s (Rosenbloom 878 . Although I agree with this , I go further by extrapolating that IT and globalization were two of the biggest forces that determined how the world is today . As a matter of fact IT and the internationalization of economic activity (Rosenbloom 878 ) are very co-dependent : the internationalization of economic activities would have been slower without the technological developments in the information technology , and developments in the information technology would have been slower if the internationalization of economic activities were slow . From this co-dependency resulted what is called the global village , without any of the two - IT and globalization - the development of the global village ' is difficult

Global Village was first used by Marshall McLuhan in his book The Gutenberg Galaxy . He characterized it as the world shrunk by communication technology to a village ( HYPERLINK "http /siliclone .tripod .com " http /siliclone .tripod .com . Global village is the world wherein information technology made space and time barriers meaningless in human communication which enabled people to interact to anyone , anywhere , anytime . This means that the world has truly become a community - a place wherein it is almost possible to meet and know everyone . Although the term itself is debatable , as Raymond Gozzi , Jr . pointed out in 1996 , the term global village is here to stay

Everything around us is changing . The way we work has changed : we now have telecommuting and now can work at home . The way we study has changed : we now can get a degree from a European school without ever leaving America - in the United States , there were 3 .2 million students taking at least one online course in 2005 . The way we bank has changed we now have virtual banks which don 't have physical branches , and of course , the way we shopped has changed dramatically . Never before have we seen changes in how consumers purchase their groceries , clothes computers , and other essential things . Everything around us is changing It doesn 't matter anymore whether the term global village is linguistically appealing . What matters is it effectively describes our world today

With the continuing integration of the world 's communities into a global village , the world and its leaders are faced with more complex issues . But of course , the world also gets to practice its humor that otherwise would have not been humorous if it hasn 't become a global village .
