Recently there has been an increase in the popularity and advances in the field of online education . Education is beginning to focus on developing online teaching and learning strategies to help students acquire new skills and knowledge . Educators are facing a lot of challenges due to the limitations of online

technology . The computer has changed the world , and its applications are widespread . Many people are not accepting online technology due to the limitations persisting However , when it comes to higher education , online technology seems to be a more choice by the students

There are a lot of differences between online education and learning and the traditional system . In the traditional system , education is a more of an interactive process , as several methods such as lectures projects , case studies , etc , are enabled . The entire process of education is synchronous (as the students have to be physically as well as mentally present at the education site , and hence more conducive to learning . As there is a face-to-face interaction between the teachers and the students , the students are able to clear their doubts as and when they arise , and hence it seems to be more effective . Besides , the teachers are in a greater situation to motivate the students

On the other hand , online education may utilize a virtual classroom , in which the students need not be physically present at the lecture hall Although , there are several methods , which can teach the students through the online mode , nothing seems to be more effective than face-to-face interaction . However , there have been several developments in online education . One such development would be having a face-to-face conversation with the teachers using a tele-conversation tool . In this way , any doubts existent can be effectively cleared Students may also find it very difficult to be motivated by the teachers . Hence , self-motivation is very important in the case of online education . In an online system , a synchronous environment for learning may be very difficult to create

In the traditional system of education , students have to keep pace with the other students in the class and hence , slow learners may find the traditional system very difficult . However , the online system has an advantage with this regard . Slow learners can acquire knowledge in that particular subject at a pace they feel comfortable with

In the traditional system of education , a group discussion and teamwork can be enabled so that the entire process of education is more interesting and collaborative . As each individual in the team is allowed to share their ideas and thoughts with regards to a particular , responses would be generated . This would improve the pattern of thinking of the students . Such a process cannot be enabled to help the online students . However , newer techniques are being developed with respect to online education such as blogging and forming online groups which could improve the effectiveness of such a system

A student who is working and has a time constraint can take up online education and be able to acquire new skills , degrees and knowledge . In this way , the students are able to sponsor and support themselves (as they would be working simultaneously ) and hence be able to better afford higher education . Studies have shown that the self-motivation levels of such students would be higher than those in the traditional stream

Studies conducted on students who chose the online mode and the traditional mode , demonstrated that the students who chose to take up the traditional mode fared far much better than those who chose the online mode . Hence , it would be ideal that further research is conducted and new techniques be developed to help meet the shortcomings of the online mode
