The Odyssey

The Odyssey is the journey of a man named Odysseus (Ulysses ) back to Ithaca , his homeland . Along the journey came tremendous problems and interruptions made by the gods , specifically Poseidon , that is why the journey lasted for 10 years

Athena serves as a friend and protector to Odysseus . Odysseus returns the favor by worshiping the goddess above all the gods , while Poseidon that provokes strife to him , Odysseus then

Odyssey is about the right relationship of guest and host . One remarkable trait found in the epic is hospitality . The host has a zealot 's eye for the needs and wishes of the guests he identifies anticipates and provides . Attention to guest 's needs and wants become a part of the duty . The guests are showered with food , drink , flattery constant attention and gifts to take home . Food is ladled on the guests plate overflowing drinks are served until they run out of his ears . It is expected of a guest to taste everything served even those he had never seen before . It is best for a guest to take on a sample of everything . The guest should never be left unattended . There will be a sense of guilt if the guest is left not entertained or left alone
