Paper Topic:

`Obesity` and the other is `Nutrition`

Comments on Obesity

According to the presenter , the article was selected based on the current obesity epidemic ' in the United States and the prevalence of prepacked foods , fastfood chains , high caloric foods in the market that are deemed to be contributory factors to the prevalence of obesity . I agree with the presenter in this respect . The study aims to help obese individuals modify their personal eating habits and physical activity environment in to reduce exposure to obesogenic 'cues in to help them maintain long term weight loss (Carels , 2007 Indeed , obesity

is a leading health concern in the United States and this study will be a good source of information for information dessimination regarding obesity

With regard to the appropriateness of the research design the presenter discussed the statistical tests and the sampling method used in the study . The participants were selected through advertisements published in the news . Those who responded were selected if they fit certain criteria such as obesity or basal metabolic index (BMI ) greater than 30kg /m2 and nonsmokers . Those who responded but had cardiovascular disease , musculoskeletal problems contraindicated for moderate physical activity and with insulin dependent diabetes were eliminated . The authors of the study were correct in making these criteria since the subjects were to be subjected to a weight loss program . The sample would have been more significant if the subjects were still picked randomly from the news respondents . However , there were only 51 subjects used . This number is not significant to be able to make generalizations and valid conclusions

The presenter did not discuss the importance of the results of the study in the real world or in the pharmacological industry . This study revealed that subjects on weight maintenance intervention had significantly greater weight loss maintenance than the no contact (NC participants . It also revealed that helping obese persons modify their personal eating habits and reducing their exposure to obesogenic cues such as exposure to unhealthy foods or cues that encourage physical activity are important in effective weight loss (Carels , 2007 However , it is difficult to generalize these results due to various reasons . First , it is possible that the significant results is attributable to close monitoring in the MI group . Secondly , there is a discrepancy in the length of exposure to the variables between the two groups . The MI group was six weeks longer than the NC group . Hence the superior weight loss could be due to longer exposure to the weight loss program . Thirdly , there was a problem in the monitoring at the six-month follow-up (Carels , 2007 . Hence , the results , although significant were not really conclusive . theless , it can be said that for people enrolled in weight loss programs , it would be helpful to monitor their exposure to obesogenic ' cues in for the program to be effective . Most obese people do not engage in physical activity This study can somehow encourage them to get involve in one . Likewise this program may encourage pharmaceutical companies to develop drugs that will enhance...
