invade the lungs (Bonten et al , 2004 . These bacteria are found in the oral cavity of the mouth . The normal defense , such as coughing , against these bacteria is hindered due to the presence of the endotracheal tube The normal defense is also limited by the endotracheal tube because the airway is open to provide passage way for the endotracheal tube Bacteria from the mouth can remain on the balloon that holds the endotracheal tube in place .
