When the Soviet Union broke up in 1991 , five countries were given independence . Kazakhstan , Turkmenistan , Uzbekistan , Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan quickly became independent states . However , due to its location , Central Asia is still under the influence of the Soviet in trade and commerce . Its vast natural resources were largely untapped due to fear and reservations . But after foreign invasion in the Caspian Sea in search for oil resources , the oil exporting countries quickly rose and became active in the global energy market . The Central Asian region suffered heavy downpour in economic development immediately after the collapse of the Soviet Union . Despite the vast natural resources , transporting them was difficult since the region is landlocked . Its distance from the sea limits the transfer of agricultural products . The lush energy resources attracted many foreign beginning with the United States . The entry of foreign investors brought about economic growth in the past 10 years . Since 1997 , the region experienced booming economic performance as shown in table 1
