When the Soviet Union broke up in 1991 , five countries were given independence . Kazakhstan , Turkmenistan , Uzbekistan , Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan quickly became independent states . However , due to its location , Central Asia is still under the influence of the Soviet in trade and commerce . Its vast natural resources were largely untapped due to fear and reservations . But after foreign invasion in the Caspian Sea in search for oil resources , the oil exporting countries quickly rose and became active in the global energy market .
