Running Head : FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE THEORY AND CURRENT NURSING Explain the relationship of the Florence Nightingale Theory to current nursing practice . Is the Nightingale 's Theory relevant today [Writer 's Name] [Name of Institution] Explain the relationship of the Florence Nightingale Theory to current nursing practice . Is the Nightingale 's Theory relevant today Florence Nightingale Theory states medicine and nursing must be evidently distinguished from each other , and during her time this was certainly the case . Prior to her theory , nurses were lower- figures who were the `handywomen ' of the society

. They were frequently compensated for their services with gin , and to make their calls they repeatedly had to walk the streets alone at night , something a decent woman would never do . In differentiation , physicians came from the decent middle and upper-middle classes and perpetually their social and educational backgrounds were very dissimilar from those of the nurses who took s from them . Prior to Nightingale 's theory of reforming nursing , it has to be said that there already survived a differentiation between these occupations . This is possibly not the kind of differentiation Nightingale supposed . According to her nature or healthy surroundings was responsible for the curing . According to Florence Nightingale Theory medicine is the surgery of functions , as surgery is that of limbs and organs . Neither can do something but eliminate barriers neither can heal nature only cures (Potter , 2004 , pp 4-11 Medicine helps nature to eliminate the obstruction , but does nothing more . The theory given by Nightingale is highly relevant today as research has proved that it is the nature that resists against all the obstacles and the medicine works as a catalyst
In present times nurses energetically involve in this procedure of `putting the patient in the finest condition for nature to take action upon him ' if provided suitable training . This has also eliminated them from their submissive position to the physician . As suggested by her theory in the training of nurses one must aim at making them intellectual , meticulous hand-maidens to the medical staff . In present days , the training of the nurses is conducted on the basis of her theory
