The Necklace ' by Guy De Maupassant is a short story about a woman living in Paris , Mathilde Loisel , who is wrongly placed by divine gaffe into a small family of artisans . She doesn 't have high hopes from her life and she doesn 't expect to be wedded to a wealthy or a distinct man She settles for a clerk working in the Ministry of Education but she feels despondent over the thought of being married under her stature as she considers highly of herself a woman with

charming looks and elegant poise . She feels she is in the wrong place and believes that she was created to lead a luxurious life and deserved more than what she has She dreads everything around her for being inferior and depleted . She wants rich artifacts and lavish furnishings and tries to imagine indulging herself into those luxuries

The craving she has developed within herself for wealth and splendor eats her up and she despises almost everything around her . The reasons behind her envy for rich and despise for poor seems to have born from childhood . She had an old school friend who was rich . Mathilde was grief stricken by her richness and she would weep for days and stay gloomy

Mathilde is portrayed as the kind of woman who lives an abhorrent life hating everyone and everything around her , longing for things that illustrate only exterior splendor rather than inner beauty
