According to population demographic figures , African Americans are the largest minority group in the United States . Unfortunately though African Americans have had to go through hard and difficult challenges to get to where they are . During earlier years in their history African Americans had to contend with individual as well as institutionalized racial discrimination and segregation . However in the recent years due to increased levels of immigration as well as changes in the way African Americans are treated in the United

States their population has significantly increased . This research paper will be guided by data obtained from U .S census bureau to analyze demographic characteristics of the African Americans over the last 30 years

According to demographic figures , the African American population in the United States stood at 22 .6 million in 1970 . This figure represented around 11 of the total population in the United States with other minority racial groups having lower figures . However with time this changed to a total population of 33 .5 million representing approximately 13 of the total population in the United States . This represented a 57 increase estimate in a period spanning 30 years .
