Introduction

The Health Belief Model is the most recognized model for health-related behaviors . This model holds that as incited by signal or stimulus like medical check up appointment or dis symptoms , the response of every individual is shaped directly by his or her belief s or attitude on the advantages and disadvantages of the consequences of a particular action (Redman , 2007 . The HBM argued that individuals perceive a specific health threat based on their beliefs on

their vulnerability and its seriousness . For instance , for safe sexual behavior , individuals may perceive the degree of health threat such as HIV infection but may fail to think themselves a susceptible to it . On the contrary , for some health-related issues such as dental health , individuals may realize their vulnerability but may perceive it as less serious condition to take action to prevent dental health problems such as gum disease and cavities . As such , the HBM has been utilized in health-related behavioral research specifically on disease prevention . However , the model was not sufficient to predict health-related behaviors thus other variables like efficacy beliefs as well as its supplementary variables were integrated into the model to improve its predictive value (Strecher and Rosenstock , 1997 . These scenarios signify the inaccuracy of predicting behavioral response through attitudes and beliefs . As well , the HBM may not adequate to explain the patients ' mode of thinking concerning specific health problems
