1 ) The process through which a baby learns how to move and control most its body parts and muscles to enable it stand up , hold its head up , pick a toy or sit up is referred to as motor development while motor control and learning is the study of how an individual 's brain executes muscle movements within the body

2 ) During the precursor period research was done by physical educationists whose interest was not in the

infant research . This influenced the development of motor development in that most the research conducted was aimed at describing motor development in terms of the child 's strength and physical growth . During this period the research that was conducted did not have a lot of theoretical grounds and it was generally a descriptive kind of research (Piek , 2006

3 ) The two main researchers who are associated with the maturational perspective are Arnold Gesell and Myrtle McGraw . Gesell mainly studied development of movement and cognition , and then divided them into language , personal-social and adaptive behavior . Gesell appreciated the part played by the environment in other developmental processes e . g cultural influences affect the development

McGraw found out that walking and other developments were controlled by the cerebral cortex instead of the muscular function .
