What impact did the examination system have on the traditional Confucian ? What might have been the advantages of that system for the emperor , the country , the common people ? Could a similar system work in America

Ancient China was a society governed by scholars who were regarded by society as one of its main cogs owing to their wisdom and intelligence These were the ones who governed China in behalf of the emperor . The basis of determining and selecting these important people

in the upper levels of Chinese society was determined by a civil service examination system introduced during the Chou Dynasty . The examination system improved continually throughout the ages during the Sui Dynasty special school were set up to train the candidates who hail from the various regions of China this would be further expanded during the Tang Dynasty with the inclusion of prefectural school . The examinations were administered by the Ministry of Rites covering subjects such as the Confucian classics (literature , mathematics , law and calligraphy , with greater emphasis on the first one . The screening is very rigorous at this level and those who have hurdled it would go through another series of exams conducted by the Ministry of Personnel which was a combination of oral and written tests . Those who passed this very rigorous series of test would then be considered for actual appointment to the imperial court (Morton Lewis 89-90
