p GOLD IN SOUTH AFRICA South Africa has vast riches of mineral resources . Diamond and gold discoveries played an important role in the growth of the earlier South African Republic . Gold was discovered in the area known as Witwatersrand . Its discovery has impacted both positively and negatively on the environs of this place . Most of the unemployed youths flocked the area in search of manual labour . This has helped South Africa in solving the unemployment problem which had rocked the country for many years This gold mining industry continues to grow . Most

of the unemployed youth with no expertise were employed and this helped in alleviating poverty amongst her people . People with expertise skills and experience were also employed in the gold mines and this has greatly helped in improving the economy . As of 2007 , the South Africa mining industry employs 439 ,000 workers . Mining of gold has also helped in improving the road infrastructure in the Witwatersrand and its environment . Roads have been improved that leads to this gold mine (Theodore , 2007
Gold exports have also helped in revenue generation . This revenue has provided sufficient capital to purchase much needed machinery and petroleum products to support an expanding manufacturing base . This gold mine has also attracted most of the South Africans and therefore rural-urban migration has been reduced . It has therefore resulted in the building of towns next to the gold mine , thus expanding economic activities in the rural and remote areas
