are anticlimactic although they add some small amount of clarity , the story would still be complete if it had ended with her husband 's comment

I might suggest his presence in a glimpse of something in a shadow or through the sounds of footsteps splashing through the water and wet footsteps leading away from the river accompanied by the disappearance of the moccasins from where they had been wedged . This addition would add the element of the supernatural to O 'Brien 's attempt to free himself of the guilt that he feels as Kiowa /the guilt disappears into the landscape
