One of the strong directorial choices in MEMENTO is the use of the common experience of loss and memory . Memory , even from the name is an obvious theme . In doing so , the director uses color to help the audience keep track of the events and in which they occur . The first set of scenes are in color this are shown to the audience in the way that Leo sees them and are reflective of his memory and the human memory in general . The second set scenes is in black and white . This scenes are linear and are in regular time and really revolves around Sam and his wife . The director had to use something visual to act as a time line for the plot so the audience would stay interested and informed
