The foundation of Microsoft was provided by Paul Allen in 1975 about the MITS Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems , Altair 8800 (one of the first microcomputers . Paul immediately got inspired by the machine and together with Bill Gates developed a version of the BASIC programming language for the Altair microcomputer . After developing the software they sold the rights to MITS , and briefly after that both of them together formed Microsoft Corporation . Many versions of BASIC were developed by Microsoft for different computer systems beginning with Altair . IBM approached Microsoft in 1980 to

discuss about the Microsoft products and the state of home computers . It was then that Bill Gates gave the idea of writing BASIC into ROM chips and besides this also provided IBM with a few more ideas of what would make a great home computer . till then Microsoft had never written an operating system therefore when IBM came to him looking for an Operating System (OS ) for their new computers Gates recommended IBM to look into Gary Kildall 's CP /M (Control Program for Microcomputers , but IBM was unable to get a legal contract for this operating system . This provided the basis of the invention of a new operating system by the Microsoft to assist IBM in their new home computers . Therefore that was the beginning of a new era for the Microsoft . Quick and Dirty Operating System (QDOS ) which was written by Tim Patterson was the foundation on which The Microsoft Disk Operating System was developed . Tim Patterson later joined the Microsoft . Gates also talked IBM into letting Microsoft market MS DOS separately from IBM PC project and hence making a fortune from the licensing of MS DOS

The MS DOS was the first operating system that Microsoft developed even though it provided IBM with what it needed but still there was a drawback in this operating system which was its lack of user interface Therefore an operating system was needed which could appeal to the user and make it easy for the user to interface with the computer .
