critical insight into the contextual meaning of these two paradigms of judgment Merit refers to an award issued by virtue of certain characteristics which the subject of the award posses . On the other hand , desert is typically or paradigmatically connected with an award issued to the subject by virtue of its actions (Pojman , 3 . In other words , one merits an award because he poses a certain characteristics which he or she may not necessarily deserve . A good example of this is found in the award of beauty pageants which is based on a critical assessment of the physical and intellectual possessions of the contestants . The contestants possess these qualities because it was handed down to them naturally rather than through any action of theirs . In terms of desert the subject is rewarded according to his or her deeds , be it good or evil
