Long term memory is the type of memory that is stored in the brain permanently . The information is stored based on the meaning and importance of that particular information . The knowledge or information that is classified in long term memory affects people 's perception of the world and influences people 's choices on which information that they should focus their attention to

There are three stages in making information

remain on a long term memory . These stages include acquisition , storage and retrieval . People acquire a variety of information through senses , mostly with their eyes and ears . The information perceived by the senses is sent to the part of the brain called the hippocampus which looks like small bananas located at the side of the ear . The hippocampus acts as the librarian who stores and retrieves information from the long term memory . The information is then sent from the hippocampus to the cerebral cortex which is another part of the brain that is a sheet of cells on the top of the brain wherein most of the long term memory is stored (Fotuhi , 2004 . Another part of the brain that is relevant in storing long term memory is the amygdala or the almond-shaped area of the brain that imprint memories that involve emotions .
