Untitled The freezing reality of the Arctic and the hard actualities that beset humanity Meltdown in the North : A s ummary The late winter of 2002 saw Matthew Sturm and his five companions across the freezing temperatures of Alaska searching for evidence of global warming . Coming across an impressively long list of data , the Arctic region is going through a transformation that has become notable no more than ten years ago . After weighing discoveries against each other , scientists from various fields , like Sturm , are now attempting to discern the future of the Arctic and the globe . The findings that these scientists will be able to obtain are fundamentally significant because the processes in the Arctic , such as the ice-albedo feedback , pose effects of great magnitude to the earth 's climate system - one of which is global warming . The chief task , then , is to arrive at a critical understanding of these processes . An understanding of the ice-albedo feedback is critical because this system intensifies the process wherein ice sheets in the Arctic region thaw or melt which in turn gives way to more alarming threats to the global environment and to the general population . Although the ice-albedo feedback is only one of the many processes that are occurring in the areas of the Arctic , it remains the most telling feature of the melting of the ice sheets in the zone that contributes in large parts to the alterations in world climates . Changes have been felt in Arctic region over the past three decades , with observations indicating the steady temperature rise over the past century as well as the decrease in the days of the ice-cover seasons . Technological devices reveal that the Arctic region 's snow-free and growing period both have increased . Mark Serreze and his colleagues made their first research in 1982 , making annual observations on the poles they put on the holes they drill until funding went scarce . In 2002 , hopes of returning to Ellesmere Island came in following a call from a graduate student . Arctic glaciers have been reducing in size and melting for fifty years , with thrice the rate in the last decade thereby causing increase in the sea level . The Greenland Ice Sheet 's western part has been identified by satellite observations as lessening while the opposite side stays intact although the rate of melting for the whole ice sheet has intensified . Researchers published in 1986 also revealed the thawing of the permafrost which can lead to destruction of infrastructures , freshwater discharge changes and , consequently , climate changes .
