Mary Whiton Calkins was a woman psychologist accomplished a lot of many rememberable things in her life time she is one woman who dedicated her entire life to work and especially work related to the development of the psychology of selves . Mary Whiton Calkins passionately delved in the field of psychology but at the same time was actively involved in the field of philosophy . This made her to be the founder of early psychology laboratory and to invent the paired associate technique . She is well remembered because of two things in life as being the first woman president of the American psychological Association and being denied her doctorate degree from the Harvard University , although this incidence would have deterred but she was used her opportunity of being a woman and those struggles to gain a strong voice to speak out against the oppression affecting women (Calkins 1919

Mary Whiton Calkins was born on the March 30 , 1863 in Hartford Connecticut to Wolcott Calkins who was Presbyterian minister . In 1880 her family moved to Newton , Massachusetts which enabled her to enter Smith College in 1882 . She further went to Europe and broadened her knowledge of the psychology classics and physiology

After her education they went back to Massachusetts and she was offered a position at Wellesley College as a tutor in Greek and began teaching in the fall of 1887 . Mary remained in the Greek Department for three years . However a professor in the Department of Philosophy noticed her talent of teaching . He discussed with Mary the position needed to teach the new field of Psychology , which was still a sub discipline of Philosophy . Due to the scarcity of women in that era it made it realistic to see her potential and offer her the position .
