at young age . Seeing his father solve people 's problems must have influenced his leadership skills that were applied during the civil rights movement and beyond . Other than being in growing in a family dominated by men of cloth , Luther had the opportunity to choose theology as his field of study . Indeed , Luther enrolled in theology classes immediately after graduating from high school he later received a Harvard PhD in Theology (King Center , 2004 These two experiences were the cornerstones by which Luther built his legacy . His childhood life with the preaching father and grandfather help him choosing a career that was religion-related . His educational career exposed him to reading and intellectual challenges that strengthened his spiritual beliefs , those of his followers , and eventually changed America to the better
Spiritual Challenges
As a black young man growing-up in racially segregated America , Martin Luther was exposed to many challenges . For instance , it meant that he could not to a school of his choice or walk freely on the streets . It is because of these challenges that Martin Luther chose to lead the civil rights movement , which was very successful in achieving goals that had eloped the black minority for generations . But it was never a smooth ride for Luther despite these achievements . His group and well wishers were constantly victimized for their beliefs , and agitation for black people 's rights . The biggest obstacle on Luther 's side was the pressure he felt from his followers , the black population , and people who believed in the restoration of black people 's rights (Ling , 2002 ,
br 112 . Most of his followers were determined to use aggressive means to reach organizational goals . Luther was however determined to attain the same goals through non-violent approach . As a result , he was seen as fearful leader who was ready to compromise on black people liberty which had slipped them for generations . He was also accused of willing to wait for more periods . Luther would hear of that in fact , he stuck to his grounds and persuaded his followers to be patient in their agitations . In the end , this spiritual leader was able to quell his followers . Luther was also facing some pressure from authorities who wanted demonstrations cancelled as they disturbed public peace when chaos erupted .
