For the author , it was noted that women are marked in particular ways that left no woman in this society unmarked (Tannen 404 . On the other hand , men are left unmarked

br according to the of the author (Tannen 404
To a certain extent , the arguments of Tannen that women are marked and men are unmarked may be accepted . It is deemed valid for the situations she presented such as in clothing , biological , physical appearance , etc There are expectations that most women have to consider and this bores out of their preference . In most cases , these preferences are constantly aligned with the expectations or marks
However , there should be a deeper understanding of the men being unmarked . Though , indeed , they are not given many choices for their physical look , this narrowness that the author presented serves as the mark for men . They are limited to this narrowness that people perceive of them and they could not go otherwise . For a CEO , it is forbidden to wear anything out of the normal dark business suites and wearing a yellow coat with a bright orange neck tie would receive smirks and second looks . Likewise , just as women are expected to act according to the roles they are expected to fulfill , men are also expected to be strong , be a provider , and be the one to accomplish tougher jobs . Not being able to fulfill these would affect how people see them
