Introduction

The scientific advances in medicine in the early twentieth century had immense human collision . Widespread deadly diseases were cured and the formation of birth control would send a fissure through the United States like nothing else . I was born on September 14 , 1879 and came from a large Irish Catholic family , was introduced to birth control as an adult and soon became very energetically involved in efforts to legalize it . My

work as a visiting nurse focused my attention in sex education and women 's health . I was surprised by the incapability of most women to attain accurate and effectual birth control , which I thought was primary to securing freedom and autonomy for working women . I was steady in my search for simpler , less costly , and more effectual contraceptives (Asbell , Bernard , 1995 ) I found out , women , particularly those who were poor , had no choice regarding pregnancy . The only way not to get pregnant was by not having sex- a choice that was almost always the husband 's . After seeing the bodily and financial destruction of large families on my patients and from the emotional scars of watching my mother die an early death after the birthing of my children , I dealt with the political concern by opening the first US birth control clinic

My unlawful pamphlets were expended around the United States , which then activated a birth control debate . This further provoked the U .S Attorney and Comstock , the man who had barred my articles . Then in 1915 I returned from Europe to confront my proceedings and face trial . Yet I sustained to stand ground and argue the requirement for contraceptive information . Ultimately I was let off as the U .S . Attorney 's office did not want to create a...
