in 1820 Missouri 's admission as a slave state would have favored the Southerners and this request thus , instigated fear and concern among the Northern and Southern states of America , regarding the sectional balance and power , in the Congress and the federal government (which was nothing but a confederacy of the states . This fear was reinstated with the territorial expansion , and conflicts over newer territories eventually created several constitutional crises
These crises unfortunately led the country towards the Civil War , and this paper shall shed light on fact that expansion brought sectional antagonism to the boiling point , split the Democratic Party in the late 1840s , and set the nation on the path to the Civil War
