This paper builds on the understanding that managed care in health care system is a program that is aimed at reducing costs of health care services through different means to initiate a critical discussion on the assessment of the impacts of managed care . The earliest cases of managed care , dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century when physicians started providing prepaid health care services to employees and their dependents

. There have been various legislative changes aimed at improving the health care system in the country . Accordingly , managed health care in the country has its benefits and drawbacks . This paper looks at the positive and negative impact of managed care in the United States as far as cost , access and the quality of healthcare are concerned

Introduction

The system and structure of health care that is currently referred to as managed care ' has its roots in a series of alternative arrangements in healthcare that emerged in different societies across the United States in the early twentieth century (Lynch , 1992 . The healthcare arrangements were aimed at structuring an approach that would meet the healthcare needs of chosen groups of people in the community efficiently and at lower costs . The selected groups included those residing in the rural areas , and people working in the lumber mining and railroad industries and their families .
