Malcolm X never had the formal schooling that most of his peers got At the age of 17 he left school and soon found himself in a life of crime . In his time in jail , he was able to teach himself how to read and write . The experience was a life changing one for Malcolm X as he wrote that I practically couldn 't read my handwriting myself it shames me even to remember it . My spelling and my grammar were as bad if not worse ' This was one experience that he admits changed

his life but hopes that no other American had to go through

The attitude that Malcolm X had toward a Homemade Education ' is clearly echoed in his sentiments towards education in general . He had regularly stated that one of the things that he regretted most in his life was his lack of a formal academic education . I would just like to study . I mean ranging study , because I have a wide-open mind . I 'm interested in almost any subject you can mention ' Even in his later years he declared that he wanted to return to school to finish his education and eventually earn a degree

The path towards literacy was a difficult one for Malcolm X but it was one that changed his life forever . He would regularly get a dictionary and literally reproduce the entries . After making the copies , he would then read aloud what he had written . Over time he soon began remembering the things that he had written . This was an integral part of the homemade education of Malcolm X because it was through this avenue that he was able to broaden his horizons . According to Malcolm X , I have often reflected upon the new vistas that reading opened to me

Though he was in jail , reading allowed him to explore outside of the four corners of his cell . Places , histories and events were usually destinations for Malcolm X as he read almost every book that he could find . For him , his homemade education had changed his life and he was certain that it could change the lives of others as well . I knew right there in prison that reading had changed forever the course of my life
