In his book Prince ' Machiavelli gives a detailed account on how principalities were formed , he gives an account on how political power was acquired , perpetuated , and used in the western world . He is of the strong opinion that power should be forcibly acquired through military might rather than the use of law . This he achieves by discussing about various types of principalities and on the ways they can attack other territories or defend themselves . Further he gives his views on how princes should do in to gain

power or even to conquer other territories . Machiavelli teaches that princes should not be too generous or too mean . He asserts that if a prince chooses to be over generous this will encourage greed and resources of the state will be exhausted Again , if he becomes mean he will be labeled as a miser however , his advices are that it 's better to be a miser than be hated for trying to be generous (Chapter II

Again , a prince should be heeding to advices given by a select group of wise elders whose views are important in the running of the state However , it is the prince wisdom that will prevail in the making of a decision . A prince should also command respect from his subjects through his conduct and should seek to gain honors by conquering as many territories as possible
