The Lottery
The Lottery ' story by Shirley Jackson seems to be a common scenario With the story we can draw several interpretations . It can be that the story is portraying a scene on the days of Jackson . It can also be a scene during World War . It can also be just an imagination of the author but as far as the story is concerned we can get several meanings . The Lottery ' story is like a life of a human being . In this lottery nobody wants to win because winning means death , pain and the like . The

lottery takes place not on a real place but a symbol of a time or event . The place used is like a time and when the lottery is drawn , it is like drawing who will next die . The place , maybe it 's a bed of death Everyone does not want to win . The place is where the final draw would occur for a man to be sentenced to death . On the other hand , the paragraph two and three gives a hint that the story will end up using the stones . The story will end up unhappily because there was no sign of happiness on that paragraph
Jackson is really good in writing . Her story depicts how artistic she is when it comes to writing . As I 've stated , the story is about death In paragraph five there is a wooden black box , faded , and almost worn out . One thing I guess hwy the people do not pay attention in making a new box because if they do they were only just agreeing to their death and thus giving death a chance to rule . In the story , people were afraid to win (die . Of course nobody wants to die . The fatal slip is the key or a note who will be the next . I noticed that the black is usually used in the story . Black symbolizes sorrows , mourns , death and the like . When it comes to death nobody will say I am willing to die . Even a man who will jump from a building to take his life is afraid to die . Why I said so ? On a television , there was a report of a man who jump form a building for suicide . His head goes first or he goes down in an up-side down position . What he did was he covers his head with his hands . If he wants to die why did he cover his head ? It 's a human nature to protect him against harm . Usually , those who commit suicide were only driven by their emotion . Well anyway , there is another symbol in the story . It is the pile of stone . As you noticed , the stones were used at the end of the story . Mrs . Hutchinson was stoned . What do this stones depict ? It symbolizes the death at which the people were facing . Because the author witnessed the world War , she was able to write a story that state how a death will occur . During war , you do not know when your life will end One thing fro sure , your life will be ended painfully as if you die slowly . A death during war is like piling a stone and afterwards the stone will be used for your death . In other words , death is at hand Even you can be the cause for your death . Even your subordinates can be a cause of your death . Why ? It is a state when survival is the main objective . People will use other people for them to escape from the hands of death
Jackson for me has an attitude of a watchful person . She watches every detail that she witnessed . She has an attitude of a leftist . Why I said so ? In her shop autobiography Jackson declared that her purpose in writing the story was to tell the readers what has truly been happening to their lives , as she said inhumanity . I 've seen a movie that tells the story of what happened during World War . Civilians were sometimes treated as slave . Sometimes they were used by the militaries for their own purpose . For worst , some were used as a sex slave . Like in the story , all of them have to be chosen randomly by picking a piece of . The boys collected or gathered stone , but for what ? To be only used for their death . In her story , Jackson wants to tell the people that they have a choice . They can stop the lottery just like what the other village did . Jackson wants to tell the people on her time through the story to do something that will stop the inhuman activities . What is really the cause of war ? It is the agreement between nations . It is the authority right ? But who are the one who suffers ? It 's the people . Some wars just occur due to the self interest of the leaders . Like what happened in the lottery , Mr . Summers is the one leading the people for the lottery but still he joins but was not chosen to be the winner for how many times . In reality , who among in the position who declares war will be the one to fight ? Authorities just stay for a command . Who are really in war are the people . Shirley Jackson is the Jose Rizal counterpart of New York . Rizal used his talent in the field of writing to let the people take away their blind folds given by the Spaniards They were enslaved they become slaves in their own land
Lottery in June , corn be heavy soon a statement by an old man Warner . This implies that they loss hope already because as what he said , he is used to that saying . In another way it is also a symbol of hope . They have the faith that soon the lottery (war ) will be over . The corn symbolizes the vast and abundant life ahead free from starvation because starvation is the result of war . It is like saying : soon the sun will shine or the rain will stop
Shirley Jackson is driving the people to stand for their right as what I stated . Jackson wants to end the inhumanity and the pointless violence that is happening to her time . Jackson just transfers the setting into a small town . This line : They do say ' Mr . Adams said to the old man Warner , who stood next to him , that over in the north village they 're talking of giving up the lottery ' just simply implies that Jackson is telling to her readers that there is a choice of ending the war . She is motivating the people to feel what really is happening , that they were just fools in joining the lottery . In another way the whole story tells what Jackson had gone through . Just like the villagers , did not retaliate . They just obey . Even though somebody says it 's unfair because it is truly unfair , everybody still obey and stone the lady . It can also be that choosing the armies were symbolized by the lottery but we cannot say that because it is not only men were chosen . Everybody had a chance to be chosen , so it can 't be this speculation . In another way this story can 't also be just a mere story . Why ? This line proves : Her purpose in writing the story , Jackson declared had been to shock the story 's readers with the graphic demonstration of the pointless violence and general inhumanity in their own lives . See ? The story was mainly to invite the people to stand to their write
Sometimes people write stories such as this in to transmit a message . During this time the public declaration of disagreement of the system will cause the death of the pursuant . Many people , like Rizal used this medium to be able to tell what is really happening . People will sometimes be quiet if nobody will encourage them to stand . In the same way , the story is to encourage the people . It is like putting pieces of woods into a small fire . What will happen is that a great fire that will be able to light the whole place will appear
