It showed a great deal of Beah 's life in war-torn Sierra Leone . The book began with particular scenarios of his serene early childhood . However , this peace did not last very long . Upon reaching the age of 13 , the peace Beah experienced was suddenly changed by a vicious calamity when the civil war fuming all throughout

the nation countryside has struck his village . Rebellion and counter revolution forces assault villages . The attacks were all so cruel . There are even instances when people were burned alive
This particular tragedy forced children to become soldiers in an early age . Upon the assault on Beah 's village , he and his brother became isolated from their family . Beah and his brother sauntered in different devastated villages along with other boys , who are also famished , worn out , and lost . No matter where they go , there are always those people who wants to end their lives , out of a certain feeling of vengeance , out of dread , out of bewilderment or hatred (Tama , 2007
The countryside is so perilous that nobody on his right mind would just go about trusting anybody . During this time in the war , Beah stated that the choice given him could not really be called a choice at all

Overall , the story is nothing short of amazing , not only because of Beah 's ordeals , but also because of his capability to express it .
