After managing to enroll in what he deems to be the proper educational institution of his choice , he is then saddled with the 2nd most important decision he will ever make in his life . This is the decision which will mark his coming of age and independence form his parents . The

decisions as to live at home , an apartment , or dorm during college is the primary indicator of burgeoning independence . The main factors to be considered are the cost of rent , sources of food , and privacy
Since residence rental is the biggest expense of a college student those who choose to attend community colleges often live at home . Thus eliminating the cost of rental and freeing their finances for other educational needs . For those who choose to live on campus in a dorm though , the situation is highly different . Those attending college on scholarships may live in a dorm as part of or as a requirement of their scholarship . If one is renting a dorm room , the rental usually covers the whole term and is beneficial in the sense that there are no cost of utilities to worry about . In contrast , apartment dwelling requires monthly rental and utility payments which can pose a problem for a student living on a tight budget . Apartment rentals also go up over the years and money must be allotted for such increases . Therefore , when choosing the right dwelling for the student , he must have a rental fee cap in mind and compare the varying cost the 3 types of housing before making a decision
While those who live at home while attending college have the benefit of home cooked meals courtesy of his parents , those who live in dorms or apartments must allot a huge chunk of their monthly allowance to their sustenance . Although dorms may offer free meals to a certain degree dormers usually opt to eat out as a group in to further bond with their classmates and dorm mates . Food costs go down for them because the cost of the meals are usually split within the group . Unfortunately dorm life forbids the existence of a cooking area or instrument in the room although there are situations when microwaves are allowed . But because the foods have to be bought pre-cooked , this would dent a students budget considerably . This is in direct contrast to an apartment situation that is outfitted with a proper kitchen and students are allowed to prepare all their meals
