Little Rock Nine

Little Rock Nine : Integrating Education in the 1950 's

In the 1950 's , the government , spearheaded by President Eisenhower took on dramatic ways of transforming the country by recognizing the equal rights and privileges of African Americans . Education was not spared from the transformative programs of the government and called for the desegregation of all schools throughout the country . The desegregation of schools would then allow African Americans to enroll in public schools and share classes with the Whites . Although most school districts complied with the law and worked on integrating African

br Americans into their school system , some school districts specifically those in the South tried their best not to integrate African Americans into their own school systems

The Central High School in Little Rock , Arkansas is one of the schools which tried to avoid racial integration in the school system . Perhaps they had difficulty accepting these changes because of a number of reasons the feeling of superiority over African Americans , fear of being outshined by an African American , or mainly prejudiced judgment and misconceptions . The popularity of Little Rock Nine is due to the controversies and hardships nine African American students Ernest Green Elizabeth Eckford , Jefferson Thomas , Terrence Roberts , Carlotta Walls Lanier , Minnijean Brown-Trickey , Gloria Ray Karlmark , Thelma Mothershed-Wair , and Melba Pattillo-Beals from Little Rock encountered during those tumultuous times . Then governor , Orval Faubus conferred with the National Guard before school started to block the nine African American students from entering Central High gates who took their posts but were asked by the federal government to withdraw weeks after President Eisenhower then sent members of the United States Army to protect the nine students on their way to school from protesters and also inside the campus where they experienced physical and verbal assault from their classmates . However , not all their classmates were cruel there were also white students who accepted the African Americans and developed healthy relationships on their way to reach their educational goals
