Leonardo da Vinci was considered the epitome of a universal genius . He was aptly called the Renaissance Man ' because of the sheer ingenuity that is commensurate of his splendid inventions and ideas . Born at Vinci in the region of Florence , the illegitimate son of a notary and a peasant girl . His parents are Piero da Vinci and Caterina . Da Vinci honed his talent with Verrocchio , a Florentine painter at that time . Yet Da Vinci was not a painter alone , he endeavored in all kinds of professions . As an engineer he came up with the archetype of the helicopter and a calculator . Arguably , Da Vinci 's innovations were the linchpin of all inventions that are used today . Leonardo 's youth was spent in a Florence which was ornamented by the masterpieces of these artists and by Donatello 's contemporaries .
