Nursing ethics are principles used in evaluating the risks , merits and social concerns of the nursing actions . The nursing field has many codes of ethics . The nursing ethics were put into practice during the early periods to ensure that human rights of patients are respected The nursing ethics are based on the virtues of nurses , their duties and promotion of human rights

of nurses is responsible for stating the nursing ethics . International council of nurses was founded in 1899 with the aim of bringing nurses together and advancing their social - economic status worldwide . Today the federation has more than 120 national nurses associations

Introduction

Nursing ethics demand that the nurse advocate for the interests of their patients by giving them an opportunity to decide on their treatment and providing all necessary information for them to make the decisions . The nurse does this under the principle of informed consent , and fully understand the implications of their choices

Nurses must be obligated to their duty of care when they make decisions for their patients who are either incapacitated or have a mental disability . Nurses are obligated to give all necessary information to their person of care but may reconsider this when the information is bound to cause harm , the principle underlying this is truth telling

Ethical codes state that nurses must keep information given to them confidential unless if given permission to tell a third party , or if sharing the information will preserve the patients life . Though it is difficult to measure the quality of a person life , nurses are required to consider the quality of life of the patients whether they are conscious or unconscious

A nursing code of ethics has been established and it gives guidance on ethical decision-making and the nursing practice . The code of ethics applies to all nurses and is influenced by current conditions . It emphasizes on values safe ethical care , health and well-being , dignity justice , confidentiality , choice , quality practice environment and accountability
